However, the authors would like to fine-tune both textbooks before launching them officially, so the textbooks will not be officially advertised this year. This announcement is only for current users of CiC3 and participants of the JALT Internatio nal Conference workshop. If you happen to be interested in using CiC4 Book 1 from next April, please let us know. We will only print the number of copies necessary for the teachers who will have contacted us by January 20th. And if you want to continue using the current edition of Conversations in Class Third Edition (CiC3), you don’t need to worry; this textbook will remain available in 2024 and beyond. This is because as a one-year bilingual textbook, it is actually quite different from CiC4.
Conversations in Class, Fourth Edition Updates and changes to the format
We have three main changes in mind: 1. Removing Japanese translations from the textbook itself, and providing them on a password-protected dedicated website, so that teachers can choose whether to use them or not. We are in favor of using L1 in the A2-level speaking classroom in order to maximize efficient speaking practice and mini mize confusion, but we recognize that not all teachers feel the same way, and that some institutions actually forbid the use of Japanese in class. We want to give teachers the option of using Japanese or not. 2. Splitting the book into two volumes, each fit for one semester. It seems that nowadays most oral communication English courses are semester-based, and that sometimes there is even a requirement to use different textbooks, each with a separate ISBN, in each semester. 3. Further streamlining of our format. Small details make huge differences. The three first editions of CiC have seen us exploring different directions. The pre sent direction could be defined as: streamlining, simplifying, keeping only the core of what makes our format popular.

It is completely scaffolded, in the same way as people lear ning to play the piano would practice scales: students simply replace the underlined phrases with the phrases in Vocabulary Boxes A and B.

Sounding Natural
Conversation
Writing a dialog with a class mate is a very popular activity for A2-level students, as it is both creative and collabo rative. Having to perform it provides an added incentive. Students can perform their dialog to classmates, the teacher, or the entire class, according to the size and time constraints of the class. Sounding Natural Notes refer students to the Golden Rules and the Conversation Strategies outlined at the end of the textbook. Incorporating such cultural advice into their speaking practice will help students sound more friendly when having a conversation in English. Dialog

After the lesson : REVIEW
To motivate students to memorize key vocabulary in advance and review key sentence patterns, teachers can give a quick written test at the beginning of each class. For example, after finishing Lesson 2, the teacher can an nounce, “Next week, you’ll be tested on the review of today’s lesson, and on the preview of Lesson 3”. The fact that the essential contents are gathered in one page makes it easy for stu dents to preview and review content. The fact that there is a limited number of items to learn or review makes it a good deal for students, who can see the benefit of spen ding a few minutes outside of class in order to easily gain a few points. This perspective is consistent with the Immediate Method’s view that regular, in-class tests can be useful tools to motivate students and direct their lear ning, provided they are valid, reliable and practical.
Now, let’s review the core points of the lesson. Try to use them when you speak, and little by little your conversations will become longer, richer and more natural.
