TO TEACHERS The purpose of the Expression section is to make sure students have understood the content of the Toolbox. There are three ways you can use this section: • Let students brainstorm sentences using the Toolbox and Vocabulary boxes. • Dictate several example sentences and have students write them down. • Give sentences in Japanese (provided in the Teacher’s Manual), and have students translate them to English. We call this procedure “lego translation” because in contrast with the traditional Grammar Translation method we ask students to put together little “bricks of language” to form meaningful sentences. The idea is to make sure that students understand the content well enough to use it to express themselves during the upcoming class activities.
