88 Part 3: Three speaking test ideas 2 While Student A writes his first line in English, Student B tran scribes it in Japanese 3 Next, the students switch papers Now, Student B writes her first line in English while Student A writes it in Japanese 4 The students repeat this process, producing as much language as they can in the time allotted During this stage of the exam, both students are actively co-creating every turn of their conversation, either in coming up with some thing to say in English or when transcribing what their partner said This is a pedagogically sound process that provides extra language practice and encourages creativity Stage 2: Practice speaking for 10 minutes In Stage 2, each pair has 10 minutes to practice performing the conversation they just produced Ideally they should already be able to hold such a conversation, so this practice session is more like a final warm-up before assessment While small edits and tweaks are permissible, time is of the essence, so students really need to concen trate on speaking as fluently as possible During this practice time, you will notice students going over their creation numerous times while looking at both the English and Japanese versions Their goal
