6. Asking for repetition

相手に繰り返し言ってもらう

One cause of silence in conversations is when you can’t understand what someone said because they spoke too fast. In that case, using one of the expressions below will get your partner to repeat what they said, which will give you another chance to hear it again. Use these expressions to control the pace of the conversation.

英語で会話をしていると、相手の言っていることが速すぎて聞き取れず、思わず黙 り込んでしまうときもあるかもしれません。でも、ただ黙り込むのはやめましょう。 次のような表現を使って相手に繰り返し言ってもらえば、もう一度質問を聞くこと ができます。会話のスピードも、自分に合わせてもらえるでしょう。

1 Janice: ところで、フランセーズ、今週末は「whachagonnado」？ 2 Frances: ごめん、もう1 回言って。 3 Janice: （ゆっくりと）今週末は何をするの？ 4 Frances: ああ！えーと、友達と映画を観に行くつもりだよ。

7. Saying you don’t understand

分からないときは、「分からない」とはっきり伝える

If your speaking partner uses difficult language and you don’t understand what they said, it’s very important to say so using one of the expressions below. Doing so is much better than staying quiet. While you may not understand, signaling that you don’t shows that at least you are still interested in communicating.

相手の言った単語やフレーズが難しくて理解できなかったときでも、大切なのはそ れをはっきり相手に伝えることです。分からないまま黙っているよりもずっといい のです。たとえ理解できていない部分があったとしても、それを相手に伝えれば、 まだ会話を続けたいのだという気持ちが示せるからです。次のような表現を使いま しょう。

8. Getting needed vocabulary

英語で何と言うかを聞いてみる

If you want to say something but the words don’t come forth, use one of the following expressions to get the vocabulary you need.

伝えたいことがあるのに、適切な言葉が出て来ないときには、次のような表現を 使って、英語で何と言うかを聞いてみましょう。
